I like his "Birth in Futureverse" series in particular, especially his "Self Portrait as The Born Feeling Begins" below, but his more geometric Form Forming Formation is great as well.

Some interesting ideas about femininity and ritual in Helena Wurzel's pieces. I love how she can use such simple forms and color palettes to convey really layered scenarios, and I admire her ability to comment on modern society and the portrayal of gender and female sexuality and appearance while still creating images that are fun to look at. I also like her willingness to mix gouache and cut paper, which I think often don't work well together, but are very cohesive here. She teaches and critiques at RISD, and some of her work is also available over at 20 x 200.

Moscow born illustrator Evgenia Barinova (though pronounced as Yevgenia, in case you were wondering) has been making some great stylized illustration. I love the the consistently rectangular but noodly way that she draws her characters, and how she places them in these surprisingly perspective based landscapes. Lots more work on her website, including some really nice simple kids illustrations.

Ellie F-P's "Writers' Portraits"

Anyways, I've always loved Kanevsky. The epitome of haunting painterly portraits, these are so perfectly composed and fluid, capturing the soft colors and curves of the human body while also demonstrating experimental geometric forms.

Especially digging her work for the recently opened Jackson-based "Audrey Grace" boutique, who have also commissioned some work from other Domestic Etch favorite Caitlin Shearer and loads of other awesome illustrators. Kai Carpenter

My RA at RISD (Simeon Kondev) actually showed me Kai's work when I was considering majoring in illustration, and though I now think I'm leaning more towards graphic design (I prefer looking at illustration work, but I think I am better suited to graphic design work) I am still completely infatuated with his style.
First off, I love me some good sci-fi/fantasy illustration, and these are so perfectly detailed, right down to the tiniest highlight an air ship's nose (click through if you can, they're much better at full size!). As if that wasn't impressive enough, Kai does all of these in gouache. GOUACHE. But even more impressive, all of the pieces below are under 4" wide. Ahem. I think I've made my point.
Keep up the great work, Kai! More work on his website. Also be sure to check out his awesome comic series "Red Cap" comics, which is, you know, also done in gouache.

I believe this is based off of an actual house in Providence, fyi.

These are so perfectly unnerving. The balance of grotesque eroticism and completely average subjects and locations with slightly eccentric color schemes and repeated limbs is spot on. I also love the almost topographical shading on his figures - the way the lines are very distinctive and stylized, but also really curve around the forms in a realistic way. His works are all done on mylar, which also gives them a nice blended transparent quality. More work on his site.

I really love the way she draws - the red/yellow skin and bulbous cheeks of her little characters are completely endearingly childish, yet totally effective as well. I can't believe it's 2012 already!

2011 was an eventful year for me in terms of big milestones; not only did I graduate high school, but I got my first real paid job doing graphic design work over the summer, I started college and living on my own, and finally (only two weeks ago!) turned 18. I also finally got to go to China for a month, after studying the language for 6 years, which was pretty freakin' amazing.

That said, what's most important to me is that this past year, I have met so many amazing people - both at Brown and RISD, over the summer, and through Domestic Etch/twitter shenanigans - who have really inspired me to work my hardest at the things I really care about, and to exercise my creative brain (ooohhh) every day. I've also continued to be lucky enough to spend time with all my loyal friends and family.

I can't thank all of you enough for being there for me and supporting and reading the magazine and blog, and I am so proud of all the contributors who have helped to make it so great.

I can only hope 2012 holds equally amazing opportunities for all of us, and continued support and enjoyment over everything arty and good in the world.

I was going to try to write my own blurb about Ryan's show, but the blurb on his site is so accurate that I figured I'd just copy paste NO JUDGEMENT GUYZ

"Ryan Heshka unapologetically pays homage to Golden Era sci fi pulp while creating a style that is also uniquely his own. He explores themes of man vs nature, (even though often the "nature" is from another world) as well as the exploring the ideology of pushing the limits of science as a tool to help and further mankind, and the technological terrors that can be inadvertently unleashed as a result.

His work is acrylic painted on wood panel, heavily varnished and embellished with tags cut from pulp magazines, which serve as inspiration and explanation of each piece."

That said, this show looks really cool, so if you live anywhere near Seattle, you should check it out!

We're looking for artwork submissions of any media, interviewees and interviewers, and anything else you think might make a good feature or article!

For artwork submissions, please send an email to elizabeth@domesticetch.com with a link to your portfolio or some attached images by OCTOBER 25th to be considered for the issue.

If we like your work (which we probably will!) we'll write you after Oct. 25th with the **secret theme** and give you the deadline for images, which will be sometime around early-to-mid December.

Amazing work coming from Shanghai-born, Denver-based artist Lu Cong. Cong studied both biology and fine art in school, and you can definitely see the resulting consideration towards accurate anatomy in his work; his rendering of skin is incredible, as is his close attention to bone structure around the eyes and nose. The cool colors in his work create such a haunting atmosphere, which is definitely augmented by the eye contact in most of his pieces - something that while, slightly unusual, really works here. Lots more work on his site.

Love the color scheme and texture in these pieces by Sachin Teng. There's something really effective about the contrast between the flat color blocks next to the fine line-work and more representational shading techniques. The references to technology in his work are pretty great as well, and I absolutely couldn't agree more with Sachin's artist statement about being an illustrator who thinks like a designer, and how art a sort of "aesthetic discource" or subliminal message. He also won a gold medal in the Society of Illustrators Annual Exhibition so GOOD JOB MR.TENG. Website for more.

Absolutely spot on lighting and amazingly well integrated props only enhance an already lovely yellow and cream color scheme in this set. I think fashion photography can often fall into the trap of pretty girls making awkward poses, but Rus manages to keep it as a true art form; highlighting the style of the clothes while still supplying just the right amount of quirky commentary from his point of view. Some brief Summer issue news...

I thought it might be nice to give everyone a little update about how the summer issue is going:

The good news?

The issue has some really great artists and tons more original art on theme than we've ever had before. Seriously, I cannot say enough good things about the people we were able to work with and the amazing work they did. We also had the chance to do some super awesome interviews with some super talented (and very thoughtful!) artists, and I'm very excited to be able to impart some of their lovely arty wisdom to you.

I'm so looking forward to you guys being able to see what everyone has come up with!

But here's the bad news....

While the layout itself is almost done (nothing but grammar edits and table of contents left at this point)

MY COMPUTER CRASHED.

I had been keeping this on the mild DL until I was able to send my hard-drive away for recovery, but they have gotten back to me and claim to have saved the files, which has saved me from total breakdown.

However, I haven't actually gotten the files back from them yet, nor do I even have a computer/one able to actually access the files with right now even if I did have them.

FFFFFFF

So... for now, I'm working on the grammar edits and will hopefully just be able to integrate those directly into the layout as soon as I can get the files and either buy a new computer, or re-purchase my software and install it onto someone elses computer to finalize the files.

Just thought I'd let you know why I've been such a scrub about everything recently!

So, if any of you have any advice for how this might be easier resolved, or maybe err uhh... live in NY and happen to have coreldraw on your computer (I know I know but I can't afford indesign and this is already a corel file for now) and would be willing to let me borrow it, I would basically die of happiness.

Anyways, thanks for the continued support through this crummy time!

My excitement over your interest in Domestic Etch and my desire to get this issue out and have you guys be able to see all the amazing artists I've had the chance to work with is what makes this all worth it. Eeek!

I feel like i finally put together a puzzle this weekend - I have seen and loved Fumi Nakamura's work in dozens of places over the past few years (Threadless, Gap, regularly in Nylon Magazine, etc.) but only after clicking through on a lame link via tumblr did I realize the styles were similar because goshdarnit it's the same person.

Anyways, this "Our Hands Will Eventually Destroy Everything Beautiful" series she's doing is pretty spectacular. Her colored pencil work is ridiculously intricate and beautifully blended, and boy can she draw hands. Plus all that negative-space hair? I think I'm swooning.

Marcos Chin

I've seen Marcos's work on more than a few sites before and read his blog, but have yet to post about him for some reason - so shameful! Anyways, Marcos is an amazingly talented illustrator with a more than impressive portfolio; he's done work for the New York Times, Penguin Books, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, etc., and doesn't seem to plan on stopping anytime soon. His illustrations have a wonderful sense of color and balance, and a subtle sense of humor to balances out his interesting takes on lighting and perspective. Also, he happens to write one of the more thoughtful artist blogs I've seen in a while - he is funny but also very earnest, and gives great advice about overcoming both visual and life problems, as well as interesting thoughts about the illustration industry. His students at SVA are very lucky! Check out his site for more work than you can probably look at in one sitting.

Oh my God oh my God oh my God. You know I love realism, but you also know I love painterly brush strokes and unexpected colors in representational paintings, so just imagine my excitement when I came across the work of Heather Horton. Not only is she an absolutely exquisite technical painter (oh Lordy look at those folds of fabric) but she's able to capture amazing snapshots of solitude simply and beautifully; looking at her paintings, I feel sympathy for these seemingly expressionless and depressed women, but also a strong sense of release and redemption. Heather approaches the idea of bed and the human effects on fabric to capture the recharging power of sleep and quiet that everyone experiences on a daily basis. I hope you get as much emotion out of them as I do, and please go on her site to see more! She also has a few interesting process posts on her blog, like this one for the 5th image below.

I've never met Lauren Youngsmith, but she drew my sister a picture of a girl riding a narwhale and since then, I've been hardcore creeping her art. Her line work looks effortless, and her characters have just the right balance of creepy and cool. There's loads more on her website that I didn't post because of pesky watermarks, but you should take a look for yourself; I promise you won't be disappointed!

Sarah Joncas

Sarah Joncas's art has the rare and cherished combination of precise technical skill and intense and stylized themes. I think she hits just the right balance between kitschy and cinematic (who'd have thunk, right?), and she uses oil the way it was meant to be used, layering until she gets amazingly deep tones and bright expressive lighting. Her site has a ton more work if you're interested - Sarah appears to be ridiculously prolific with her creation, especially considering the size and medium of her pieces.

Also, in the neverending case of people who look like their art, I think she really resembles her girls with their wideset eyes and round button noses.

I want to be every girl in his drawings; they're sexy and tough and have awesome clothes and perfectly shiny asses knees and cheeks. They battle monsters and play guitar, all while looking completely nonchalant. Also, they're surrounded by Sam's bitchin typography. Absolutely obsessed with the work of Portland artist Angie Wang right now. Often, I think these kind of digitally colored and tightly rendered line drawings look flat, but Angie's work is far from flat; I love her sinuous Japanese folk inspired ladies and surreal scenery, and the tiny linework she does in fur and tree branches. Her color schemes are great as well, pairing muted orange with neon magenta, and, another personal favorite of mine, she colors her outlines with navy blues, army greens, and even (GASP) pale pink. I need to move to Stockholm so I can rub shoulders with artists like Marcus Gunnar Pettersson. His watercolor ranges from subtle lilac washes to dense blue blocks of color, and his penwork from fine hairs of black to thick bulbous tree trunks of ink. His adept technique only complements his delicately sinister creatures and strange thinly mustacheoed men.

Ted Sabarese is, without a doubt, one of the best conceptual photographers I know. Not only does he consistently come up with amazing ideas for photo series, but he shoots them with amazing lighting and composition. Hello lovies! I just got back from a two week trip to China, so sorry for the break in posting! I went to Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Longshan, Su Zhou, Guilin, and Yangshuo, and had an amaazing time. If I was a better photographer, I'd show you pictures, but I suppose I'll just stick to the pros for now.

Also, just reminding you that tomorrow is the last day to send in portfolios to be reviewed for inclusion in the next issue, so get on that if you're interested! Elizabeth@domesticetch.com with links or attached images, per usual.

Anyways, I was pre-ordering myself a copy of the lovely Paperbrains magazine, and after being absolutely smitten by the cover, looked up the artist to only realize I'd already seen his work on Kitsune Noir (Yes, which I still refuse to call the Fox is Black) a few months ago! I absolutely love flatness and pale colors Paul uses, and only wish he had more work online! Hopefully I can get him to make something for us one of these days...

As a side note, I wonder if the X is his real middle, and if it is, if it stands for Xavier, because I can't think of any other X names.

Valentin Fischer

I can't seem to find much information about Valentin, except that he is German, and that most people posting about him online seem to think he's a woman. What I can tell though, is that he's one of a select group of illustrators nowadays who are able to make digital work that is as emotionally compelling and beautiful as traditional painting. I love the soft skin and glowing backgrounds, and the hints of geometry and symbolism in his work. He says he is influenced by James Jean and Sam Weber, and I can definitely see the connection in his work. His name also sounds like Valentine Fisher, which is pretty cool as well. (Note: let me just say that I met Rebecca over half a year ago at this show, yet have somehow managed not to post about her work already. For that I am sorry!)

Some of the scenes that Rebecca paints remind me of a cotton candy colored version of my horribly awkward Bat Mitzvah or my mom's junior prom. Others are closer to what I suppose I wished my Bat Mitzvah had been like - wonderfully composed and feminine snapshots of time. Either way, there is no question that Rebecca has an incredible eye. Her CV is particularly impressive, as she got her B.A. in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, a post-baccalaureate certificate in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and this year, her MFA from Hunter College in New York City. Her work will be in the annual "Made in NY 2011" juried exhibition at the Schweinfurth Art Center in NYC, which other than having my charming boss Kenise Barnes as one of the jurors, has its opening reception is this sunday so stop by if you're in the area! Niki Pilkington

Loving the accents of color on these pencil works by Niki Pilkington! She's able to use simple materials to draw simple and effective illustrations, and yet her girls still manage to have such personality and style. I only wish I spoke Welsh so I could understand what all her beautiful typography actually says!

Can't wait to see more by her - plus she's selling prints soon. Yay! See her website for loads more, and commission her if you're interested, because it seems that, yes, she really wants to draw you.

I'm so smitten with his work that I can barely even translate my passion into words, but here's a small attempt: Olli Kellet's photos seem to be of a summer with bleached sunlight and pastel bicycles, where the mundane becomes the extraordinary, and trees turn into people. He has an amazing sense of color and humor, and creates beautiful diptychs that tell bizarre narratives of office romance, or rather, Danielle Steele love stories. In short, he is a God. Lizzy Stewart is a super talented illustrator living in Edinburgh. While my favorite pieces of hers are the pencil landscape works with a touch of color, her portrait of Naoko from Murakami's (my favorite author) Norweigan Wood makes my heart melt. I'm already on her etsy shop right now looking to buy something fun to hang up in my room!

While I'd seen and certainly enjoyed her other work before, I only recently saw some more traditional work by Davis, and boy was I impressed! These painting have such depth, and I love the mix of the flat, strangely colored protagonists with the epic sprawling old American west style backgrounds. That said, you should be sure to check out her illustration and gouache pieces, one of which I stuck on the bottom for good measure - here's her site!

Lydia Nichols is ridiculously awesome; her work has just the right amount of naive folk sensibility, contemporary geometric patterns, and simply fun pop! I love how she splits each illustration into little segments and color blocks, and the extremely precise way in which she paints her little bits and bobs. I especially love her personal pieces on wood, which can be seen on her personal website "hullo lydia"
